Angla Windmill and Heritage Centre. Saaremaa, Estonia
In the north of Saaremaa Island, there is an amazing place where you can explore windmills not only from the outside, but also from the inside. Here, you may get acquainted with the local folk culture and have a delicious lunch in the cafe.
The key attraction here is the windmills. There are five of them: four traditional Saaremaa rod mills and one Dutch-type windmill built in 1927. The structures have been preserved in excellent condition, and today visitors can not only see the windmills from the outside, but also go inside and see all the mechanisms with their own eyes. The Dutch windmill has a special platform, so you can get outside and walk around.
The park also has many examples of agricultural machinery: carts, tractors, ploughs and various mechanisms used in agriculture. All exhibits are accompanied by information boards in several languages.
At the Traditional Culture Centre, visitors can get acquainted with an impressive exhibition to learn a lot about Estonian national crafts. There is a large collection of mechanisms, sewing machines, wood and metal tools and other unique exhibits, and a guide will explain to you how they work. There is also an exhibition of works made from Saarema dolomite, which is the core material of the building structure.
On the second floor of the Centre, you can see living premises as they were many decades ago. At the moment, there is an exhibition of porcelain dolls displayed consisting of more than 2,000 pieces in total.
On the ground floor, there is a café where you can have a hearty meal and refreshing drinks. Among other things, you can try the traditional Estonian kefir-based drink, kama. If you’d like to have a picnic, you may make use of special tables in the park.
With prior reservation, you may participate in various master classes, which is a great idea for a full immersion in the history of various crafts.
