The architectural competition by Patarei Merekindlus for the reconstruction of the Patarei Sea Fortress has been won by the “Taevakaar” (“Sky Arch”) project developed by Hayashi – Grossschmidt Architecture (HGA).
In total, four architectural firms were invited to take part in the contest by presenting their vision.
The owner of the Battery Prison and the head of US Real Estate, Urmas Syõrumaa, noted that the task for the architects was challenging and “the winner’s project was the only one to allow to embody a complex idea as a single whole by means of practical solutions and meanings”.
Urmas acquired the Battery Prison from the state for 4.6 million euros upon the condition to maintain it. The reconstruction is planned to be completed by 2026, but due to the economic crisis the project may stall. However, the first negotiations with potential tenants have already begun.
All entries are available to public in the Patarei Sea Fortress Gorz courtyard daily, from 10:00 to 22:00.
