Biržai Cycling Routes: Discover Lithuania’s Northern Pearl

The Biržai region, located in the northernmost part of Lithuania, bordering Latvia, is a land where centuries-old history intertwines with unique nature. It is best known for its majestic Radziwill Castle, brewing traditions, and karst sinkholes: the dissolution of gypsum rocks creating picturesque lakes and mysterious caves.

We present new cycling routes that will help you explore this unique region actively and from a new perspective.

1. “Biržai Discovery” Route

25 km | Easy | ~6 hours

This easy circular route is ideal for families and those in no hurry. The route follows comfortable city bike paths and quiet streets, linking the main cultural attractions.

What to see: the magnificent Biržai Castle Fortress, Lithuania’s longest pedestrian bridge over Lake Širvėna, the Astravas Manor, a narrow-gauge railway complex, and the local airfield.

2. “Karst Lakes and Kirkilai” Route

42 km | Moderate | ~7 hours

This moderate-difficulty route is perfect for those who want to explore the region’s mysterious natural environment. The road surface regularly changes, from smooth asphalt to gravel roads and unpaved forest trails.

What to see: the famous “Cow Cave” sinkhole and the Smardone Spring. The highlight is Kirkilai: a unique system of 30 lakes and a futuristic canoe-shaped observation tower.

3. “Lithuania’s Northernmost Point” Route

82 km | Difficult | ~10 hours

A true adventure and endurance test for experienced cyclists. The route leads through the wild Birzai forests, remote picturesque villages, and nature trails along the rivers.

What to see: the confluence of the picturesque Nemunėlis and Apaščia rivers, the secluded borderland atmosphere, and the main destination—the official northernmost point of Lithuania.
