Cave Museum in Piusa, Estonia
The Piusa Cave Museum in Southern Estonia, in the village of Piusa, is located within a 30-minute drive by car from the city of Võru. This is a unique place where you can explore the largest man-made caves in Estonia having emerged after manual mining of glass sand between 1922 and 1966.
The museum offers visitors a fascinating tour in one of the most beautiful caves, which is also the highest of the 6 caves in Piusa. The caves offer a nice place to cool down during the summer period because it is about 5 to 10 degrees in the cave.
During the tour, museum guides tell you about the origin of the caves, their history, and their formation process.
The largest colony of bats in Eastern Europe winters in the caves. On the way, the guides will also unveil some secrets of bats’ life, features, and unique abilities.
Also, the museum features a large collection of minerals and rocks. Here you will learn what minerals were found in the caves and what processes led to their formation, as well as why sand changes color under the influence of minerals.
Many factories used the sand from the Pius caves to produce glass. In the museum, you can also see an extensive collection of glass products, which were produced by Estonian factories from 1920 to 1990.
The museum has a hall for seminars and lectures with a capacity to accommodate up to 50 people; children’s workshops and a cafe are also available to visitors.
Hiking at the Piusa Caves Museum is not only an opportunity to learn more about the caves but also to enjoy the beautiful landscapes that surround the museum. Nearby, there is a trail with a length of about 2 km equipped with wooden signs and information boards indicating the route.
Please note that visiting the caves is only possible with a guide. We recommend booking the tour in advance. To do this, drop a mail at piusainfo@gmail.com
