Pöide St. Mary’s Church in Saaremaa, Estonia
The church in Pöide is an architectural monument of the 13th-14th centuries and the largest one-nave church in Western Estonia and on the islands. It plays an important role in the spiritual and cultural life of the local population.
The church was built in the middle of the 14th century on the ruins of the castle of the Pöide order; its lower parts of the side walls have partially survived. The rich carved decor of the church is one of the most striking examples of Estonian High Gothic.
Today, the church building is not in its best shape yet open to visitors.
