Estonian Aviation Museum. Tartu, Estonia

The museum has been operating since 2002, immersing its guests in the history of aviation and many interesting exhibits.

The museum is located within a 20 minutes’ drive from Tartu city centre. The museum’s large territory contains 26 hangars where exhibits are located and its own landing strip.

The museum’s exposition began with a private collection, but today you can discover 38 airplanes, 4 helicopters, surface-to-air missiles and more than 800 models of various aircraft and missiles.

The collection includes civilian aircraft, military fighters, bombers, fighter-bombers and training aircraft. Each exhibit has an information plate with historical information and the main parameters of a particular airplane or helicopter. Next to most of the airplanes there is a ladder you can climb and explore the pilot’s cabin.

The exposition is divided into different themes. For example, you can learn about the structure of aircraft engines in the engine section, and the air defense section exhibits anti-aircraft guns and surface-to-air missiles that were deployed in Estonia during the Soviet era.

The museum also has interactive elements that will help you delve deeper into the history of aviation and engineering, such as piloting and parachute jump simulators and a real 20-meter catapult. There are trampolines for children and active adults on the territory.

Every year, generally in June, the museum hosts the Estonian Aviation Days, the largest event of its kind in the Batics. Visitors can expect a diverse program: demonstration flights, parachute jumps, interesting lectures and much more. Each year, the program varies.
