Estonian Traditional Music Center in Viljandi is a place that preserves the tradition of folk music and introduces it to the public. This is a large complex primarily known for its annual folk music festival, which attracts more than 20,000 visitors and 50+ artists from around the world.
The festival takes place in July and lasts 4 days. The festival has a broad concert program including over 75 performances and additional programmes. Some concerts are held on the hill near the ruins of the castle, while others occur in churches and in the Traditional Music Center. The theme of the festival in 2024 is “Patterns and traces”, and it takes place on July 25-28. The ticket sales for 2024 edition starts on December 1st.
The festival is a great holiday for visitors of any age as it embraces workshops, activities of various kinds and delicious national treats. In 2023, the festival celebrated its 30th anniversary, and every year it attracts more and more international audiences.
Besides the festival, the center hosts diverse cultural events throughout the year. For example, every year the center holds the Folk Music Harvest Party, miscellaneous music competitions, events for children and youth, camps, exhibitions, excursions and concerts of Estonian and international music.
The center offers many opportunities for young talents to shine. For example, you can organize your exhibition in one of the halls of the center or enroll to perform on a special stage during the folk music festival.
At the center, there is a cozy Aida cafe, whose windows overlook the picturesque park and the menu offers modern European cuisine and a variety of drinks. For the younger visitors, there is a children’s corner with toys available.
