Europos Parkas, Open-Air Museum of the Centre of Europe and Liubavas Manor, Vilnius, Lithuania
A stunning blend of contemporary art and history awaits you just 20 minutes from Vilnius. This journey will take you to the geographic center of the continent and five centuries back in time to one of Lithuania’s most enigmatic manors.
Europos Parkas (Park of Europe) is an open-air museum created to mark the geographic center of Europe, as determined by French scientists in 1989. Situated on a vast 55-hectare site surrounded by picturesque forests and meadows, it features over 100 sculptures by artists from around the world.
The story of Europos Parkas begins when a 19‑year‑old artist, Gintaras Karosas, envisioned transforming a neglected forest into a harmonious ensemble of art and nature. Over the years, he succeeded in shaping a unique creative landscape where artworks blend seamlessly with the surrounding environment. What once existed only as a Lithuanian artist’s dream has become a reality – today, Europos Parkas is a place for all dreamers and romantics.
Here, you’ll see works by such masters of contemporary art as Magdalena Abakanowicz, Sol LeWitt, and Dennis Oppenheim. One of the most impressive exhibits is a giant maze of old televisions, the artwork by G. Karosas, which has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. A stroll through the park is more than just an observation of objects; it’s an opportunity to explore the world through form and space.
Just a few kilometers from the park is Liubavas Manor, one of the oldest manors in Lithuania, whose name romantically translates as “Love.” The history of this place is linked to some of the greatest names in Lithuania who ruled here: the Goštautas, the Radziwills, and the legendary Barbora Radvilaitė.
The crowning glory of modern Liubavas is its mill museum, which received the prestigious Europa Nostra award for its impeccable restoration. It is the only watermill in Lithuania where the technological equipment has been fully restored. You can see century-old mechanisms in action, from grain processing to electricity generation, and learn about the manor’s “Golden Age”, when a private orchestra played and famous sculptors worked here.
Europos Parkas is open daily from 10:00 AM until sunset. The Liubavas Manor Watermill Museum operates from May 1 to October 15 on weekends. Please contact the museum before your visit to book a time slot: +370 5 2377077, hq@europosparkas.lt
