Gačionys Manor. Rokiskis region, Lithuania

Gačionys is not just an architectural monument, but a living family home, where history and aesthetics are intertwined with the warmth of private hospitality. The owners of the estate, Gintaras and Sigutė Balčiunai, open the doors of their estate to share with the world their unique heritage and the atmosphere of true salon culture.

The main building of the manor, built around 1928, is considered one of the best surviving examples of wooden neoclassicism in Lithuania. Inside, guests will find interiors with professional polychrome painting and rare details. In the office, you can see the unique “Hunting” wall hangings from the Zuber company, which decorate the White House in Washington and only two estates in Lithuania. The living room features a Steinway D grand piano, recognized by pianists as one of the best instruments in the country.

A permanent exhibition of works by Pranciškus Smuglevičius, the first professional artist in Lithuania, is presented in Gačionys. Here you can also get acquainted with the sculpture “Family” by the world famous master Jacques Lipchitz. For tech savvies, an exhibition of antique Ford T models is open, embracing examples in completely one-of-a-kind original configuration.

The estate’s territory of 13 hectares is a masterpiece of landscape design. Here, 9 historical ponds connected to each other were restored, and the longest pontoon bridge in the region (128 m) was built across Lake Gačionys. The southern facade faces a lawn of wild tulips, a green heritage of the 18th century.

The two-hundred-year-old linden alley leads to the rose garden, where 50+ varieties of ancient and modern roses are collected. In 2025, two vineyards were planted here.

In September 2025, the family chapel, designed personally by the owner, was consecrated. It is decorated with the image of the Mother of God Ostrobramskaya by the outstanding Vytautas Kasulis.

The estate also carefully preserves literary memory: Count J. Weisenhoff’s book “The Sable and the Young Lady” (1912), which describes the hunting traditions of Gačionys during the time of the Barons Rosen, was republished here.

Important: the estate is a private home and is open to visitors by prior arrangement or on announced visiting days.
