Haapsalu Castle is an episcopal castle with a cathedral, which became a core for the future city formed around over time. The castle was founded in the 13th century and used to serve as the residence of local nobles until the end of the 17th century. The castle has been perfectly preserved to this day, making it one of the main attractions of Haapsalu.

According to a legend, the ghost of the White Lady resides in the castle. Being the canon’s sweetheart, she was walled up alive in the wall of the chapel. Her lover was killed too, either in prison or in a pit with tigers. Every August, on the full moon, the White Lady appears in the castle and mourns her beloved. To celebrate the infinity of love, a music festival is held here at this time.

In the main part of the castle, there is a museum of the Middle Ages which has a pass to the church’s south wing.

Entrance to the territory of the spacious courtyard is free; you may attend the museum for an extra fee.
