Independence Square in Rokiškis, Lithuania

One of the most significant historical sites in the region, the square was established in the late 18th century. From the very beginning, it was the center of city life, hosting a market, fairs, and events.

Today, the Freedom Monument stands in the center of the square, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Lithuania’s independence. It has become an important symbol of the city and has survived difficult historical times.

The square is surrounded by ancient 19th-century merchant houses. On one side stands the Church of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist (Šv. apaštalo evangelisto Mato bažnyčia), and on the other side begins an alley leading to the Rokiškis Manor, now home to a local history museum.

Today, Independence Square remains the center of city life and an important part of Rokiškis’s history.
