Viešu Canyon in Sigulda, Latvia
The Viešu Canyon is a rather wild area without well-maintained paths. It appeals to those who like to observe nature in its original form, without crowds of tourists, and enjoy challenges on the way to the location.
When the river flows over hills and rocks, it wears away rocks, forming canyons. This natural phenomenon is observed even in spots with small differences in height, for example, in Latvia. Sigulda is famous for its red rocky outcrops, but its canyons are not that widely known.
In order to get to the Viešu canyon, one must pass by private property. Beware: the descent is steep enough and the soil is clayey, so you’d better take along rubber boots and some old clothes. At the bottom, you can walk along the bed of a shallow river along the rocky outcrops. There are no pointers, so prepare to get guided by the coordinates.
