KGB Prison Cells. Tallinn, Estonia

Home » Объекты » KGB Prison Cells. Tallinn, Estonia

In the very center of Tallinn, on Pagari Street, there are former KGB prison cells established. Today, it houses a branch of the Vabamu Museum of Occupation and Freedom, and visitors can explore an exhibition about the terrible crimes committed in this building.

“Locked Up Stories: The KGB in Estonia” is one of the darkest and most powerful exhibitions about the country’s recent past. The exhibition reveals the story of political repressions, arrests, and the struggle for survival during the Soviet occupation. At that time, the building on Pagari Street was the headquarters of the KGB in Estonia and a pretrial detention center. This is where arrested politicians, soldiers, scientists, journalists, and ordinary citizens were brought. They were interrogated at night, tortured, and then sent to Patarei Prison or to hard labor. Today, these basements are open to anyone who is willing to learn and remember what people went through during the totalitarian era.

As part of the exhibition “Locked Up Stories”, you will learn about the work of the repressive machine: how the KGB organized the network of arrests, what methods were used against prisoners, how people survived in inhumane conditions. Here you can hear real stories: how prisoners learned to send each other messages in Morse code, how they supported each other despite fear and isolation. You will walk along narrow corridors, see cells, including solitary confinement, and be able to imagine what it was like to spend weeks or months here. This is not just a museum, it is a place of memory and strength. The exhibition makes you reconsider the history paths and helps you remember why freedom is so important.

This summer, the museum offers group tours in English every Wednesday. The tour lasts about 50 minutes. You can see the schedule and buy tickets at vabamu.ee/en/events/public-tour-at-the-kgb-prison-cells
