Klaipeda Castle Museum. Klaipeda, Lithuania
This interactive museum, with outstanding exhibitions for both children and adults, reveals the history of Klaipeda and its castle across different periods.
The Castle of Klaipeda (Memelburg) was built by the Livonian Order at the mouth of the Dane (Dange) river in 1252. It played a key role in the conflicts between Lithuanians and Germans. By the second half of the 19th century, the castle lost its military significance, and its bricks were repurposed for buildings in the historical center of Klaipeda.
In 2002, for Klaipeda’s 750th anniversary, Prince Friedrich Postern opened on the castle ruins site. This exposition, covering the 13th-17th centuries, features city models, document copies, and valuable items like a 16th-century gold ring with precious stones.
The Prince Karl Postern exhibition, notable for its mysterious vaults, explores Klaipeda’s history from the 17th to the 20th century. It showcases portraits of notable citizens and objects illustrating daily life and festivities.
The third exposition MUSEUM 39/45 is devoted to the history of Klaipeda during the Second World War. This exposition is located in the place of the former eastern curtain of Klaipeda Castle. The place in which the exhibition is located was used by the Germans as an explosives warehouse in thetime of WWII. The exhibition is divided into several halls, each telling about a different period of wartime.
The fourth exposition “Kurtina“ was opened in 2021. It is placed in the restored castle’s northern curtainwall. With the help of ~ 5 thousand finds and the latest technologies in 800 sq. m exhibition spaces reconstruction of the old history of Klaipeda from the 13th to the 18th century was created. Lovers of modern solutions have an impressive abundance: as many as 12 interactive computer terminals, 11 projectors with probably the largest projection in Lithuania (15×6 m!), 8 sound zones and various holograms.
