Klaipėda University Botanical Garden. Klaipėda, Lithuania
In the northern part of Klaipėda, just 3.5 km from the Baltic Sea, lies a secluded green oasis — the Klaipėda University Botanical Garden. Spread across 9.3 hectares in the picturesque Dange River Valley, the natural beauty of the Klaipėda region is home to flora from nearly every continent on the planet. It’s an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, family excursions, and outdoor recreation.
This place is steeped in history. The garden occupies the former Tauralaukis Royal Estate, closely linked to Prussian heritage and the legendary walks of Queen Louise. Strolling along shady alleys among centuries-old oaks, maples, and ash trees, you can discover ancient defensive ramparts and a small 19th-century cemetery, where the founder of the Klaipėda Masonic Lodge “Memphis” and his descendants are buried. Today, the garden features approximately 4,000 plant species, forms, and varieties (the total number of plantings exceeds 40,000!). Here you can discover:
– an arboretum representing collections of coniferous and deciduous trees and shrubs;
– ornamental and apothecary gardens with sections of herbaceous flowering plants, as well as a collection of spicy and medicinal herbs;
– exhibitions: a lush rose garden, a collection of climbing vines, bulbous flowers, and a unique zone of Baltic coastal dune plants.
The Botanical Garden also offers engaging workshops and educational tours for guests of all ages. Guests can choose from three programs. “The World of Scents: Create Your Scented Sachet” introduces essential oil plants and allows you to create your own sachet with dried herbs. “Garden Flavors Palette: Create and Taste” offers tastings and the creation of signature spice blends from herbs grown right in the apothecary garden. “What’s Hiding in Your Teacup?” is dedicated to a tasting of herbal teas collected in the garden, with a guessing game of ingredients and a discussion of their beneficial properties.
