Liepaja Museum of 17th-19th Century Interiors: “Mrs. Heuer’s Guesthouse.” Liepaja, Latvia

In the heart of Liepaja, you will find a unique architectural monument: “Mrs. Heuer’s Guesthouse.” This restored historic building is more than just a museum; it’s an atmospheric journey through time, revealing the stories of two families and two different eras. If you want to experience the spirit of old Liepaja and discover the everyday life of bygone centuries, this museum is a must-see.

The museum has undergone extensive restoration and today is an incredibly detailed space recreating interiors from the 17th to 19th centuries.

The building’s first floor takes visitors back to the late 17th century, when Margrethe Gertrud Heuer became the owner of the house after the premature death of her husband, David Heuer. The original layout has been fully restored, including the inn, living rooms, and the chimney with its stove. It was within these very walls that the young Russian Tsar Peter I stayed incognito during his “Grand Embassy” in May 1697. Museum visitors can see restored acanthus leaf paintings on the walls, Baroque tiled stoves, and even visit a local tavern to sample dishes in the style of the 17th-19th centuries.

On the second floor, visitors get teleported back to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and may explore the apartment of the family of notary Christoph Wilhelm Stender. The exhibition features Biedermeier furniture, Viennese chairs, porcelain sets, and unique copies of historical wallpaper, recreated from fragments found during restoration.

The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions. The exhibition “From Childhood to the Boudoir: Dolls in a Woman’s World” is open until August 30, 2026, featuring the collection of doll maker, collector, and artist Tamara Chudnovskaya. Visitors may get acquainted with porcelain and boudoir dolls from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, dressed in outfits handcrafted from authentic antique fabrics.
