M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art in Kaunas, Lithuania
Founded in 1921, National Museum of art is the oldest and one of the largest venues of its kind in the country. The museum is dedicated to M. K. Čiurlionis, an artist and composer known as a founder of professional Lithuanian music and Lithuanian Art Society.
The museum regularly hosts various exhibitions, as well as cultural events: book presentations, concerts, scientific conferences, seminars, and lectures. For children and teenagers, there are special guided tours conducted here. Visitors can take a break at the Coffee Corner and buy some souvenirs at the Museum shop.
There are currently four permanent exhibitions in the museum:
– Lithuanian art of the 14th-19th centuries embracing paintings, sculptures, books, ceramics, and other art objects;
– paintings by M. K. Čiurlionis;
– Archaics: Lithuanian folk art of the 18th – 20th centuries includes ancient articles that have remained unchanged for centuries, items unaffected by urban culture and industrial influences, and ritual or household objects that amaze with the complexity of forms, techniques, and creative endeavor.
– Lithuania – the land of Crosses. Lithuanian crosses are a unique phenomenon, in 2001, Lithuanian cross-crafting was included in the UNESCO list of masterpieces of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
At the moment, the museum is broadcasting the VR film “Trail of Angels”, getting the viewers acquainted with 60 less-known works of M. K. Čiurlionis in virtual reality accompanied by his own music and the music of Mindaugas Urbaitis. This is a whole new word in the world of art. Virtual reality technologies allow you to immerse yourself in the pictures literally.
You can book in advance a guided tour through any exhibition of interest by calling +370 684 843 88.
The museum has 9 branches with diverse exhibitions: the Kaunas Picture Gallery, the Devils Museum – the only museum in the world, the Historical Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania, and memorial museums with preserved authentic interwar interiors, where you can get acquainted with accomplished and devoted Lithuanian culture figures.
