Maarjamäe Castle is a historic complex on the outskirts of Tallinn, where the past meets the modern. Its history dates back to the 17th century: a sugar factory operated here, and later, an elegant summer estate was established. Today, it is one of the most interesting sites in the Estonian History Museum.

Exciting exhibitions await you both within the castle and its grounds.

“My Free Country” is a captivating journey through eight halls that take you through the entire history of the Republic of Estonia, from its founding to the present day.

An open-air exhibition of Soviet-era monuments is a result of years spent by The History Museum collecting monumental sculptures that survived after the changes in the country. Today, Maarjamäe houses Estonia’s largest collection of monuments from the years 1945–1990.

For younger visitors (ages 5 to 12), there is a “Children’s Republic.” This is a play space where children can learn about the structure of the state in an accessible way and even try their hand at different professions.

In the fall of 2025, the castle opened a major exhibition, “Your Inheritance.” It invites visitors to reflect on continuity: what cultural heritage we inherited from our ancestors and what we will pass on to the next generations.

By the castle, there is a modern Film Museum accessed by a real red carpet. Here, you can not only learn the history of Estonian cinema but also take a behind-the-scenes look at the filming process. The exhibition is fully interactive: you can try on the roles of various film crew members and understand how magic is born on screen. The museum also operates a cinema with regular screenings.
