Maarjamäe Palace is a part of the Estonian History Museum. The story of the castle dates back to the 17th century. It resides on the spot where a sugar factory used to be, until it burned down in 1869; later, a summer estate was built in its place. Maarjamäe has a rich history, embracing a large historical complex with thrilling interactive exhibitions.

The castle has two permanent exhibitions. ”My Free Country” is dedicated to the history of the Republic of Estonia from its beginning to the present day. As part of the exhibition, guests are invited to discover eight halls, each introducing one to the most important stages in the history of Estonia.

The second permanent exhibition of the museum represents monuments of the Soviet era which can be explored outdoors. This collection at Maarjamäe Castle is the largest in Estonia; some of the monuments are of particular value in terms of art. Most of them are reminiscent of a challenging period in the history of Estonia. This exposition is designed to preserve this memory in order to teach future generations a lesson.

The museum also has an educational environment for children – the Children’s Republic. Here, children aged 5-12 can playfully learn how the state is organized, get acquainted with the history and meaning of state symbols and try on their dream profession.

The temporary expositions change regularly. From 25.04.2025, the summer hall of the castle will be opened with the exhibition “Eternal Summer”, where you can experience the atmosphere of Maarjamäe Castle at the end of the 19th century. In the fall of 2025, a new exhibition “Your Have an Inheritance!” will open, where visitors will be able to discuss the cultural heritage that we inherited from our ancestors and that we will leave to our descendants.

On the territory of Maarjamäe Castle there is also a Film museum with a red carpet leading to it. Here, you can get acquainted with the process of making films. The exhibition is interactive, there are many elements with which you can engage and try yourself in the role of different members of the film crew. The museum has a cinema where different films are regularly broadcast.
