Kazys Varnelis House-Museum in Vilnius, Lithuania

Museum of the Lithuanian artist and collector Kazys Varnelis is the first museum of this type in Lithuania and the only division of the National Museum of Lithuania dedicated exclusively to art.

Kazys Varnelis was born in Lithuania, but during the Second World War he went to study in Austria, then moved to Germany, and later emigrated to the United States. Over the years of wandering, he formed his style, became a famous representative of optical art and a passionate collector of ancient artefacts and rare books.

From the entrance, the museum looks like a small exhibition hall or an old residential building, but inside you’ll find the premises of 2000 square meters and 40 exhibition halls filled with paintings and items collected by Kazys Varnelis during his 93-year-long life.

You’ll have a chance to get acquainted with Varnelis’works, historical furniture, works of ancient graphics, cartography, sculpture and painting of Western Europe, rare books, art of the Far East.

The museum was created by Varnelis himself. He was engaged in the search and decoration of the premises, constantly improved the exposition, created extraordinary contrasting combinations, and eventually turned the entire museum into a work of art.

Approximately 30% of the museum is open for all visitors, the rest is available only with a guide, by appointment. An extended tour provides an opportunity not only to better understand the painting and collecting activities of Kazys Varnelis, but also to explore his library and studio.
