Kiek in de Kök defensive complex
This 500 m long historical museum complex is well-known for its gorgeous view over Old Tallinn and the access to a secret dungeon. It consists of six objects: Kiek in de Kök tower, Maiden’s tower (Neitsitorn), Stables tower (Tallitorn), Gate tower (Väravatorn), Bastion passages and Museum of carved stone.
The largest Kiek in de Kök tower has a curious story about its origin. Its name is translated from German as “look into the kitchen”, since the soldiers were fond of peeking into the kitchens of the Lower Town from the tower.
The museum inside the Kiek in de Kök tower and the Bastion passages introduces visitors to the history of the city and the military operations of the XIII-XVIII centuries. Modern design and unusual installations look very stylish in photographs.
The Maiden Tower has a restored cafe-museum with local delicacies.
All towers are connected by fortified walls and offer beautiful views over the Danish King’s garden and the Old Town.
You can take a comprehensive ticket to all places at once or visit only one of two parts: four towers or Bastion passages with the Museum of carved stone.
