Planetarium and observatory. Ventspils, Latvia

This is the largest and most modern digital planetarium in Latvia and an observatory where you can learn more about the Earth, the Universe and observe the sun. Such unusual leisure will appeal to both adults and children.

The planetarium and observatory are located in the Ventspils House of Creativity. This is an education center for interests: a total of 55 various classes for children and young people are held here.

The diameter of the dome of the planetarium in Ventspils is 8 meters, it can simultaneously accommodate up to 40 visitors. The planetarium offers a diverse repertoire of popular science films and cartoons shown 8 times a day. During the session, films about various mysteries of the Universe are shown on the 360-degree screen. Such unusual films will allow you to immerse yourself in the atmosphere as much as possible and will surprise both the youngest viewers and adults. For example, you can watch animated films about dinosaurs, planets, the film “The Apollo Story” about missions to the Moon, a film about various natural phenomena on Earth, etc. The duration of the session is 35-40 minutes, depending on the film.

The planetarium’s repertoire is regularly updated.

On the roof of the House of Creativity, there is an observatory equipped with a Meade catadioptric telescope, which can be used to observe solar activity. Two filters are used to observe the sun. The mirror filter helps to see sunspots, the dark areas of the sun. The hydrogen filter is used to see solar flares, the bright formations that rise above the surface of the sun.

It is important to remember that solar observation is only possible in clear weather and if the wind speed does not exceed 12 m/s.

The planetarium is open every day except Mondays and some holidays. A reservation is required to visit the planetarium and observatory.
