Engures Lake Natural Park
Lake Engure is the largest seaside lake in Latvia where you can meet almost all species of migratory birds residing in Latvia. For over 40 years, the base of the ornithological laboratory of the Institute of Biology has been located on the shore of the lake. Not only the center itself, but also the “houseboat” created by its scientists has become a true legend among bird watchers. Observation towers have been built near the lake for every one to make use of.
Wild animals graze on the lakeside meadows of Lake Engure: horses of the Polish Konik breed, cows of the Latvian Brown, Highland, Charolais and Hereford breeds.
Also, you can walk along the 3.5 km long orchid trail. In total, 22 different orchid species out of 32 in Latvia grow in the vicinity of Engure.
The best time to walk along the orchid trail is the end of June and the first half of July. The rest of the territory – from April to October. The length of the route to the birdwatching tower past the pasture is 0.8 km.
The starting point is the Bird Research Center on the shores of Lake Engure.
We recommend wearing rubber boots during flood season and rainy days.
