Rakvere
Rakvere is one of the oldest cities in the country and the sixth largest, located near the border with Russia. The city is known for its castle and meat products, although many are convinced that Latvia is the birthplace of Rakvere sausages.
⠀
Rakvere received its city status in the early 14th century. In 1347-1558, the territory was owned by the Livonian Order, then by Russia, Rzeczpospolita and Sweden. Rakvere has at least two more names – Rakovor in Russian and Wesenberg in German.
⠀
The city reflects the phenomenon of the Estonian province: in spite of the lack of crowds and calm atmosphere, cultural life never stops here. The local theater hosts performances every day, the city has plenty of cafes and restaurants, and local architecture is diverse and original.
