Rakvere Castle
Rakvere medieval castle, also called Rakvere Hillfort, is the main tourist attraction of the city. Through ages, the castle changed owners several times: the place belonged to the Kingdom of Denmark, the knights-monks of the Livonian Order, the Russian Empire, the Swedish state and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Livonian Order ruled Rakvere the longest.
Today, it is a theme park in the style of the 16th century. Here you can dress up as a knight, visit a wine cellar, a torture and a death chamber, a medieval brothel, a barber’s room and an alchemist’s laboratory. The Schenkenberg Inn serves dishes according to medieval recipes.
