Ruins of city castle in Koknese, Latvia
The castle in Koknese was one of the largest and most important medieval castles in Latvia. The construction of its stone walls began in 1209, and the fortified city was erected around it.
The main building was abandoned after a powerful explosion in the western tower in 1701, but the ruins are still preserved. Nowadays, it is a truly picturesque place between two rivers, Perce and Daugava.
You can take a boat and have a trip around the castle. An hourly trip will cost €5-10, depending on the vessel.
