The Republic of Uzupis
This district in the old part of Vilnius belongs to artists and hipsters and is often compared with Montmartre in Paris. This is a small isolated area separated from the city by the River Vilnia (Vilnelė), steep hills and Soviet-like industrial zone.
Uzupis is considered to be an independent republic, even though officially it is not. The district even has its own constitution with peculiar laws, for example, “People have the right to live by the River Vilnelė, while the River Vilnelė has the right to flow past people.” In Lithuanian, “uzupis” means “beyond the river”.
You can enter the Republic of Uzupis from Maironio g. and explore it in 2-3 hours.
