Rundāles ūdensdzirnavas Museum and Recreation Area. Pilsrundale, Latvia
This is a picturesque place within an hour’s drive from Riga where you can learn about the history of watermills, spend time with family or friends, organize a business event, visit a brewery, and enjoy water recreation in summer.
The Rundāle Watermill Museum is a unique place. The mill was built in the 18th century and has been preserved to this day. There used to be a windmill nearby, but unfortunately, only ruins have remained. This mill was not only used to process grain: there was also a workshop for wool spun and other activities. You can learn about it all as well as the history of the estate by visiting the exhibition, which is located on five floors of the museum and the carpentry workshop.
The museum’s opening hours are seasonal: from May to September, the museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, and from October to April – by appointment. Rundāles ūdensdzirnavas offers a conference room with a beautiful view of the surrounding landscapes. The room is well-equipped to conveniently hold lectures, seminars and other business events. The room can also be booked for a banquet to celebrate a birthday, a wedding or any other occasion.
In 2021, a small brewery was opened in Rundāles ūdensdzirnavas, where light beer is produced from Latvian ingredients. You can visit the brewery if you are interested in seeing the whole process, learning the history of brewing and tasting the beer manufactured here.
If you are into active recreation, you may enjoy water entertainment after the excursions in summer. Visitors can choose from SUP boards, catamarans, boats and canoes, which can be rented for a couple of hours or for the whole day.
In summer, various events and concerts are held on the terrace of the Rundale water mill.
