The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia: History Bringing to Life Through the Guides’ Stories
History isn’t just the chronology of dates and lists of names we read in textbooks. Behind every exhibit in the renovated “House of the Future” stands someone’s interrupted life, someone’s hope, or a silent heroic deed. Walking through these halls on your own means seeing facts. Walking with a guide means hearing voices, which is why we recommend exploring the exhibition at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia with a guide.
In one hour, you’ll walk through the most difficult half-century in Latvian history (1940–1991), and it won’t be a boring lecture filled with dates. It will be an honest story of people, their strength, and their path to freedom.
The museum is very modern and interactive, but it’s the guide who helps connect all the details into a coherent story. Together with a professional, you’ll see what’s hidden: the guide will point out details in display cases that are easily overlooked, yet behind them lie incredible paths of fate.
You’ll also find answers to many questions. You’ll be explained not only the facts of the three occupations but also how they shaped the character of modern Latvia.
Most importantly, you’ll learn stories of incredible fortitude. These are stories of deportations to Siberia, of partisans in the forests, and of people believing in the restoration of independence despite it all.
If you prefer to walk at your own pace, the museum offers audio guides in various languages. But a live conversation with a guide is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss what resonates most with you.
In addition to the main exhibition, the museum will host a touching temporary exhibition, “To Serve and to Believe,” until the end of July 2026. It tells the story of those who maintained their faith even in the camps. Guides will tell you about the most poignant exhibits, such as handmade crosses or the stories priests managed to write to their children while imprisoned.
Guided tours are available in Latvian, English, and German.
