Theatre and Music Museum. Tallinn, Estonia
The Theatre and Music Museum is located in the Old Town. In March 2024, the museum celebrated its 100th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, the exhibition “Astounding Stories about Theatre and Music” will be on display until the end of August 2025.
The history of the museum began in 1924 with a collection of musical instruments and music books compiled by the Estonian composer Peeter Süda. After his death, his friends continued working on his collection and founded the Peeter Süda Memorial Society, which was renamed the Music Museum Society in 1931.
The museum is divided into two departments, the music one containing various instruments and more than 12,000 manuscripts of composers’ works; and the theatre one boasting an extensive collection of old photographs, costumes and documents donated to the museum from 700+ miscellaneous collections.
In honor of the anniversary, a new exhibition was opened at the museum on March 23, 2024: “Astounding Stories about Theatre and Music”. As part of the exhibition, visitors can 50 exhibits from the world of music and 50 related to the theatre realm. Through these exhibits, visitors will be able to learn not only about the history of theatre and music, but also about the history of the museum itself. The exhibition includes many interactive items: various puzzles, screens and other interesting details.
The exhibition will allow you to explore the archive, research rooms and a medieval tower that was once a part of the city wall, previously not available to the public. All exhibits are accompanied by information boards with descriptions in Estonian and English.
You can explore the exhibition on your own or arrange a guided tour with the museum.
The Theatre and Music Museum is part of the Estonian History Museum, which includes three other museums: Maarjamäe Palace, the Great Guild and the Film Museum.
