Veiled with Legends: Zilaiskalns, Northern Latvia
Zilaiskalns is a village near Valmiera where nature, history and legends tightly intertwine. In the Cultural, Historical and Tourist centre of Zilaiskalns, visitors can learn about the history of the village, explore the peat fields from a bird’s eye view, ride rail bikes and enjoy the breathtaking views from the new observation tower on top of the hill.
Zilaiskalns is a special place that was considered sacred by ancient peoples. Rituals and folk festivals used to be held here, and some of them are still conducted on special occasions. In 1956, the village of Zilaiskalns was built at the foot of the hill by workers from all corners of the Soviet Union. The village had a well-developed infrastructure: there were residential buildings, a kindergarten and a school, its own hospital and shops.
Interactive immersion into history
The Cultural, Historical and Tourist center is located in a reconstructed water tower with a modern unit. Here, you can learn more about the origins of the village and its development over the decades. Visitors may view exhibits and use VR glasses to see the peat fields and the village from a bird’s eye view. Climbing to the top of the tower, you will also admire the panorama of Zilaiskalns.
Nature trail and observation tower
Not far from the center, at the top of Zilaiskalns, there is a 38.3-meter-high observation tower, which offers a stunning view of the village and the surrounding nature. You can reach the tower along the circular 3.5-km health trail, which starts at the Cultural and Historical Center.
Adventure on rail bikes
From May to the end of September, guests have the opportunity to ride on a narrow-gauge railway on a rail bike. The route to the peat deposit is about 4 km, so the trip lasts less than an hour. The bikes are equipped with four seats and child seat mounts, making them convenient for families with small children.
