Venta Rapid
This is the widest waterfall in Europe located in Kuldiga on the Venta River, which is one of the largest rivers in Latvia. The width of the waterfall depends on the seasonal amount of water: it’s generally about 100 m, but during floods it can reach 200+ m. In times of low water, you can go from one side of the river to the other along the edge of the waterfall, which is actually rather low itself, about 1.5-2 m high.
On a sunny spring day, one can watch fish trying to overcome the waterfall, swimming upstream. This explains the love to this place among both travelers and fishermen.
There is an assumption that the waterfall emerged here in the 17th century as a result of the castle construction when the building material was mined from the river bed. The castle did not survive to the present day, though its threshold has remained.
You can visit the waterfall free of charge at any time of the year.
