What to see in Aluksne in autumn?
Aluksne is a charming small town in northeastern Latvia, located on hilly terrain at an altitude of 200 m above sea level. In autumn, it transforms, filling all the local landscapes with bright colors.
1. Aluksne Park
Created in the 18th-19th centuries, Aluksne Park is one of the most beautiful landscape style parks in Vidzeme. Here, you can enjoy stunning views and explore preserved small architectural forms, such as the Vietinghof Mausoleum, the Alexander Pavilion and the Granite Obelisk. In the evening, when the park gets illuminated, it gets especially charming.
2. Templakalns (Temple Mount) and Aluksne observation tower
Templakalns is the oldest settlement in the Aluksne region. At its top, there is a granite rotunda known as the “Temple of Glory”. Also, nearby, there is one of the tallest observation towers in Latvia (37.8 m), offering a marvelous view of Lake Aluksne and the city.
3. Pilssala (Castle) Island
This historical place encourages you to discover the ruins of the Livonian Order castle. The island offers plenty of entertainment for visitors: a city beach, a stadium and playgrounds for volleyball and children.
4. Templakalna Street pedestrian bridge
The musical bridge plays 15-minute musical pieces every hour, from 10:00 to 24:00. In the evening, when the lights turn on, the bridge arouses particularly romantic vibes.
5. Aluksne New Castle
The new castle is one of the important architectural monuments of the late Tudor neo-Gothic style in Latvia. It houses a museum where you can learn about the history of the city and its surroundings.
6. Aluksne Banitis station and narrow gauge railway
At Aluksne Banitis station, you can get acquainted with a multimedia exhibition, old railway equipment and the history of the narrow-gauge railway. Here, you also have the opportunity to embark on a journey on a narrow-gauge train and get mesmerised by the picturesque places of Vidzeme.
